WHERE DO GRAPES COME FROM
First Grape cultivation is in Egypt. Details of grape and wine production are shown in the hieroglyphics of the 4th (2400 BC), 17th, and 18th dynasties of Egypt. According to the Bible, Noah planted a vineyard. In Homer’s time, wine was a regular commodity among the Greeks.
But now the great commodity of Grapes come from the US, in California. An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a delimited grape-growing region distinguishable by geographic features, with boundaries defined by the United States government’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The TTB defines these areas at the request of wineries and other petitioners. There are 173 AVAs in 30 states, with 97 of them in California. They range in size from the Ohio River Valley AVA at 26,000 square miles (67,300 km²) across four states, to the Cole Ranch AVA in Mendocino County, California, at only 62 acres (25 hectares).
All of M&M’s fresh grapes and a large portion of its fresh juice comes out of various California locations. Some of these locations or appelations fall within what is know as AVAs.
